Mastering Technical Death Metal with Archspire: An Exploration of Dedication, Evolution, and Genre-Bending show notes

dude, what’s up? Arch spire? What do you think of those guys? What do you think of technical death metal? I personally huge fan of both. Technical death metal, for sure, arch spire absolutely like those guys are excuse my french fucking insane. Like the musicianship in that band is completely ridiculous and obscene. Like the guitar players are insane, the bass player ridiculous. The drummer there’s no, there’s no way that even any of those guys, even human, they inhumanly play their instruments. And if you say you don’t like those guys, I kind of get it. Maybe it can be a bit much, honestly, but it is fucking ridiculous. Like it is insanely heavy. It is freaking brutal. Like these guys, like guys like I guess you know they’re newer, like they’ve been out since 2000. I think they’re out first sounds like 2012 or something. Maybe I’m not sure, but these guys are insanely heavy.

They have four studio albums out Relentless Mutations, the first. The second one, lucid Collection, is the first. I’m terrible at names, but the every song is just completely ridiculous and is insanely heavy. Like I said, it can be a bit much. The drummer Spencer I can’t remember his last name. I’ve seen a video of him where he was talking about his uh, drum set and this guy, literally he’s talking oh yeah, I got you know these toms here and you know cymbals and he throws this in. He’s like, yeah, nothing is above the level of my heart where I’m sitting on the drums. He’s like if I have to lift my arm above my heart, then it takes more of my heart’s pressure to pump the blood. I was like are you freaking, kidding me, dude? Like this guy is playing that fast, to the extent that he’s designing the the way his kit is to make sure he maximizes how humanly possible he can play, like what? And the guitar playing is just, these guys have an insane finesse. I’ve used that word before, but it’s for real with these guys too. Like these guys have a finesse, I’m gonna do another podcast or whatever you want to call these things on Periphery. Those guys have a finesse too.

But back to Archspire also, hey, canadian guys like my hometown guys like what do you know? Like, although I’m not from Vancouver, nor am I technically from Canada, but both of my biological parents are definitely Canadians, so, um, yeah, arch Spire, like I, I don’t even know the singer. I guess maybe I could see how some people could be turned off by it. I think the singing is brutal and I don’t know, these guys have like a pinch of everything Like this day and age, like look, if these guys have an album in 2012,.

I think I saw a thing that said their sort of like original incarnation of Arch Spire was kind of like 2007, but they kind of like you know some guys in and out of the band and whatnot, so you know. So 2007 they got together, you know. So you know these guys are youngerish. They grew up at a time like, I guess, with Napster you know what I’m saying like file sharing once and I believe Periphery probably falls into this too, where it’s interesting how, growing up with like, kind of like not necessarily Spotify, let’s say, but like easier access to music, let’s say, but like easier access to music I’m sure more and more kids like were a little more experimental at saying like, oh, maybe I’ll listen to a little bit of this and a little bit of that and you can really see it blend in to like the newer bands now, which honestly, I’m a little envious of it myself, like I think it’s so cool, it’s so, like I said, it’s this finesse you’re, it’s a. It’s honestly like a flex, in my opinion, to be able to be like insanely shredding but then like bust out into this like wicked melodic, classical, clean channel. Like it is the bass player.

There’s some songs on. I can’t pinpoint them right now. I should, but there’s a couple of songs where they’re jamming out and the bass player starts like essentially like soloing over these parts. It is like insane, like this guy solos on his bass better than I can solo on my guitar. It’s freaking, ridiculous, like. And again it’s so like brutally heavy but so catchy and rhythmic. It’s like mashuga meets like you know, some kind of groovy thing but like like the brutality of kind of like cannibal corpse and like I don’t even know man like.

But if you don’t like these guys, it’s kind of like really like I don’t know how you like they can be a bit much. I’m, I, I’m, I’m not going to be, uh, you know, blind to that, but honestly they’re, they’re just so brutal and uh, I’m, there’s going to be a show tomorrow, the day after I’m recording this episode, and like I’m probably going to miss the show show and it’s like gonna have to wait to try and see him again. But it’s like I’ve seen videos of him on youtube and they are just tight. Like this band is so freaking tight when you listen to the songs on these cds. They have drum beats and these drum blasts that are so again, I can’t over overuse the word tight, but like it’s, it’s ridiculous. And so you watch these guys play. These guys play live and they are just as tight as they are on cd, like on the record, whatever you want to call it. Like it is very impressive. Like I don’t even know. Like I said, two thumbs up to these canadians.

And uh, you definitely have to check out archspire for yourself. Like that’s the thing I guess you know and I’ll. I’ll end with. I’ll end with this people can have their opinions, you can listen to their opinions, but you really don’t know until you, listening to this, actually listen to arch spire for yourself or fill in the blank with any other band. Like it’s fine to listen to other people’s opinions, but, like you, at the end of the day, you still need to listen to it and form your own. You know what I’m saying. So, like, check out arch spire. My opinion, you will not be disappointed. And if you are, I apologize. I apologize because you can’t enjoy their music. Honestly, like they’re an insane band Like and I love technical death metal.

If you don’t like technical death metal, you’re not going to like them. You know straight up. Um, but you need to give technical death metal a chance. This stuff is, it is, it is, it is a nobody else sounds like Arch Spire. I’ll put it that way Like yes, there’s other technical death metal bands and I’ve, I’ve, I’ve been going down that rabbit trail and you’re going to hear a lot more, probably about those, but I’ll tell you what. None of them sound like Arch Spire and vice versa. Like you definitely need to listen to these guys. They’re ridiculous, so check them out.
