Celebrating the Legacy and Influence of Death show notes

Dude, what’s up? What’s going on? The band Death what’s your opinion? Is it the first death metal band, the first death metal album released by Death? Do you think they sold out a few albums down the road and they should change their name because they’re no longer Death Metal? Very interesting opinions.

I myself am a huge fan of death. I was not a fan of them on well, I mean, I was a fan of them back in the day, like in the early 90s, when I started getting more, even more into like underground heavy metal. I owned I don’t know if I own scream bloody gore. Honestly, I I more honestly liked death than more of the individual thought patterns. Spiritual healing, symbolic Sound of Perseverance is an awesome album. So I was a huge fan of Death, but now, to be honest, I’m an even bigger fan now. I wish I you know listening to him now I wish I would have had death more in my rotation when I was younger. I did not and I didn’t like scream bloody gore back then, but now I would say I’m a fan of it. Um, would I call it the first death metal album? I don’t know. Does it really matter? Honestly, I mean the bands when they’re putting out these albums at the time just wanted to be the most brutal and extreme sort of music. Like they didn’t I don’t think they cared about a label of you know, like, what kind of music is this? And kind of leading into that. You know, there are people that I say, ah, scream, bloody gore first, death out first. You know death metal, oh, leprosy is awesome, you know, oh, death was dead to me after leprosy. You know, spiritual healing oh, what is that garbage, human, that’s not even death metal. Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, like. First of all, the first thing I’d like to say is I hope I can find it, I, I, I am going to scour youtube to find an interview that I saw with him and in this interview I don’t remember who was interviewing him, but they’re talking about death metal, and I think the interviewer was asking chuck, oh, do you like your music being labeled death metal or you know whatever? And chuck’s answer was no.

Chuck scholdner did not want death to be considered a death metal band. He, he and his I’m almost going to quote him. He said that putting his band into the death metal genre was too limiting. He said, and he considered death more of an extreme metal music than he did death metal. So if you want to say death isn’t death metal, you’re not hurting Chuck’s feelings. He didn’t want to be called the death metal band anyways. He considered himself more extreme music, which at the end of the day, that’s what I would consider. It too, chuck’s got too much, too much like melodic progressions, too many different like time signatures. Uh, you know he it’s. It’s definitely more of an extreme music in my opinion opinion anyways than death metal.

If I think death metal, like straight up death metal you know Kano, mccorf’s Deicide, you know obituary, whatever, like you don’t see, like that’s why I love tech death, honestly tech death metal. Like I love the technical aspects of music, aspects of music. It takes a certain amount of finesse to do what Chuck does or what Chuck did or other musicians like him. Trust me, I’m not poo-pooing death metal guitarists that can just shred. They just from the word go. They’re playing a million miles an hour.

I I used to, back in the day, be like, ah, whatever, like anyone can play death metal. I’ve changed my opinion on that. Like I’ve been, I myself have been trying to play and write death metal riffs and I’m kind of like hmm, uh, yeah, I needed to give those guys a little more props than I was. Like, just cause they make it look easy doesn’t mean it is, and so anyways, yeah, chuck, I would not consider death a death metal band, definitely like extreme music, for sure. And you know, here’s another thing that I mean it kind of irritates me. I feel like I’m getting like righteously indignant form or something.

But like when, when people are like, oh you know, scream, bloody gore, what an awesome, you know death metal album, leprosy, awesome, love it Right, and then individual thought patterns come and spiritual healing coming, like, oh, what the hell is this shit? Oh, you’re selling out. Uh, no, actually, actually, in my opinion, as a guitarist I would say he’s musically maturing as a musician and he’s getting better like again, I’m not taking anything away from scream, bloody gore and the riffs on that and everything, but you start listening to individual thought patterns, spiritual healing, human, not so human. I feel like he went a little back more to the like, sort of deathy, death, thrash or whatever on human but symbolic 100. Like grew as a musician, sound of perseverance, completely insane musicianship on that album like. So death wasn’t selling out or or not being death metal anymore, he was just growing as a musician and getting better and maturing, and so that’s why the music of Death was going in the direction that it went in. It wasn’t because he’s like well, I’m not playing, I don’t want to be death metal, I don’t know. It’s irritating though, and frustrating, to hear people sort of not shit on him. But Chuck was the man. He was a sick guitar player. He could play insane solos. He was definitely taken from the earth too short, but that’s another topic.

Like I wonder, like you know, when people like look, chuck’s life was taken pretty early. I’m not sure how old he was, but like he was definitely under 40. I would imagine he died in the late 90s of. I think it was brain cancer. Sometimes, though, it’s like when people die early like that, and they, you know, it’s kind of like well, did Chuck make all the albums he was supposed to make, like that he’s supposed to leave with us, and then he had to leave. Like it’s kind of weird how sometimes people pass away early, even though they might be creators or whatnot.

Like there was this musical called Rent, and this guy spent his whole life, you know, writing this musical, and it was the night of the last dress rehearsal, right before like the next day was the next night, was going to be like opening night officially, and the guy had an aneurysm and died. So like he spent his whole life trying to get this play done and he got it done. Unfortunately he didn’t get to see it. But like I don’t know, it’s weird things like that happen with people. I wonder if like chuck was kind of one of those people like Sound of Perseverance came out. I mean, granted, he was working on other stuff, but it’s kind of like yep, that was.

You know that you put out everything you were supposed to put out and your time here is done, you know, I don’t know, but that’s what’s cool about music, though Even though Chuck’s gone, he still lives on. 100 years from now people could be listening to Death, you know. And so that’s what I like about creativity and art and music and stuff like that. It lives past us, you know.

So I don’t know if I were to rank the Death albums, I mean honestly this might sound lame, but I I would almost go in like reverse. I would be like Sound of Perseverance, for for sure, is like the best album in my opinion, and everyone can say if they will, but Gene Hog hoglin playing the drums on the album is just disgusting. Um, I don’t know if I would, maybe I would say human would be my second most favorite. Um, then I would say probably symbolic would be third, uh, individual thought patterns, then spiritual healing, then leprosy and scream bloody gourd would be last Like, so I mean, did I miss it? No, no, I don’t think it did. It did, um, but that would probably be my, my order of uh, death albums.
