Falling for Rush: A Journey Beyond Metal show notes

Dude Rush yeah, the band, not like rushing to the store or anything like that. But or you could rush to a Rush concert. But, um, oh, another Canadian band. That wasn’t on purpose but kind of funny Honestly. Um, yeah, so Dude Rush Three piece band, are you freaking, kidding me? Like?

Here’s some backstory about me. Like I, I kind of went into this but I’ll give you it’s a quick recap back in the day, meaning the early 90s to 2000 metalhead, death metal, a little bit of black metal, mostly like heavy metal, you know, like pantera, all the all the typical kind of thrash. You know texas, testament, anthrax, death angel, for you know stuff like that, right so, and metallica I was a huge metallica fan at that back in those days, I will admit that, up until I sort of the black album, but honestly, injustice for all. And then they were kind of dead to me, but that’s another story I’m getting. But anyways, so I strictly listened to heavy metal. I didn’t even listen to rush, like I didn’t listen to anything that wasn’t like trying to be as fast as it possibly could or as angry as it could be, so like I wanted nothing to do with like rush or pink floyd, like in.

Here’s an example like people would talk about the beatles, I’d be like, oh, they suck. Like literally never listened to them. All I all I ever heard was uh, you know, I want to hold your hands. Uh, you know was, uh, you know I want to hold your hands. Uh, you know me, if. If you pointed out to me a beatle song, be like, oh yeah, maybe I’ve heard that, but literally never really listened to him. But I’d be like, oh, they suck. Like that would be my reaction to anything. Oh, you listen to tom payne? Oh, he sucks. Like what do you think of you know what? Oh, they suck. Like it doesn’t, it didn’t matter, unless it was just like stupid, insane, blitzer, blitz, blitz, blitz, creak fast, blistering fast.

I was trying to say, or you know, offensive, blasphemous, like, unless it was any of those things, I would nothing to do with it, right, so fast forward, though, when I, I guess I would say I kind of came back to music, which is like a different episode, but like I decided, like because of spotify and stuff, I was kind of like huh, let me, like I don’t know, listen to some other stuff here, whatever, and I started venturing out, venturing out, and I’ll tell you what dude listen to rush and I was like holy shit. I was like because I can remember hearing songs on the radio and being like I don’t know. Like I’ve hear everybody say rush is this awesome band and hear tom sawyer and you know some of these other songs. I mean, don’t get me wrong, they’re not terrible songs, but it’s like I think those are like terrible songs to to represent Rush in my opinion. Like because once I heard their albums I was like holy shit. I was like these guys are really good.

Like then I understood why they said, why people would say like like Neil Peart uh, it’s not Peart, it’s Peart. Neil Peart was like this awesome drummer, no joke. Like that guy was ridiculous. Like Geddy Lee’s an amazing, uh, bass player. Alex Lyson is uh, lifeson is uh, he’s an amazing. Those three together. You couldn’t imagine anyone else being in a band With those guys together. When it’s in a band, people say it is like a family. Anyone else other than those three it just wouldn’t happen. I totally get why. When Neil passed away, geddy Lee is just like we’re done then, like that’s it, like we’re never gonna get together again, and I totally get that like 100 and god bless him for that. Honestly, like that, what a what a move. That is right. But dude, these guys, I listened to their fly by night. That was the first album that Neil Peart was on and what an amazing album.

It’s like 1976, I was trying to imagine myself listening to this album, like this record, like putting on my record player and being like dude, like wicked cool rhythm stuff, like you could see, like the prog, like starting to come out the album after that, caressing Steel not really a fan, I wasn’t a fan of that 2112, huge fan, like that is. I don’t remember, maybe that came out in 78, I think. I don’t remember. I need to. You know Google it, that’s what Google’s for Like um, 21, 12. That was a sick album.

Like, again, I’m imagining myself like at that time, like you know, listening to this music, like trying to. You know I mean imagining other things, like not existing right and just being like wow, like all I’m used to hearing is like Pink Floyd, or like you know whatever Steely Dan, and like you know ACDC a little. You know a little you know Van Halen, but it’s like Rush is kind of like whoa, you know, it’s like kisses out, yeah, sure, but Rush had this edge to them. And, dude, I’m telling you you got to listen to Rush albums because, like you want to talk about poser or whatever, man you know who wouldn’t be around if there wasn’t a rush, and like a kiss and stuff, like, don’t get me wrong, I don’t like kiss and we that that could be another episode. But you want to talk about, uh, possessed or, like you know, death or bathory or what, dude, if there, if you came, you know, merciful Fate, if there was no Rush there definitely would be a lot of those bands. I’ll tell you that man Like Rush, I’m sure, influenced those bands 100%.

So, like you want to talk about, you know, gatekeeping or whatever, or not being a poser, then you got to be a slightly more open-minded and listen to the stuff that actually influenced. What you know, you think started a genre or whatever. So back to like Kiss. Sebastian Bach I heard on a podcast talking about Kiss this way and I was like you know what you honestly like, not that he cares, but like I honestly changed my opinion in some ways about Kiss, like.

So let me tell you here I used to despise Kiss. I used to despise Kiss because you look at them, which I can’t, and you hear the music. You’re like this just isn’t lining up. You know, like, in my opinion, they look way cooler and way more badass than they sound. Okay, one man’s opinion, one man. Okay, one man’s opinion, one man’s opinion, blind man’s opinion, but it’s still one man’s opinion. So, like, I never liked them and they’re geniuses though for what they did, and that’s an again, a whole nother episode. I’m just so. I never liked kiss, I was just I would be annoyed by them kiss fans. I’d be like I don’t need. What’s wrong with you people, right?

So, sebastian box, like, you know you know how many bands are like influenced by kiss and like and I’m thinking about like, you know what, like, yeah, think about like dime bag, like totally influenced by ace freely, or like you know, some black male bands. I just heard like someone was saying like, yeah, you know why they play les paul’s because of kiss. I’m like wow, you know what I’m saying. So it’s like kiss affected these bands. Even though you don’t like their music, these other bands and musicians were shaped and molded by that music that you like. You know what I mean.

Like David Dave Mustaine actually said this during an interview and I was like you know what that’s. Ever since he said that I’ve been interested in doing this. Dave Mustaine was like whoever is like your favorite musician or guitarist or whatever he’s like, always find out what their influences were he’s like, because those influences are what you know you end up liking. So you should. You should go back and see what I was like wow, that’s a smart idea, that’s cool, and so it’s true. So back to rush. Dude, you need to listen to rush.

Like getty lee is a sick bass player. All right, his singing, I totally get it. If you don’t like it, it’s like you know cat scratching a chop, being slammed up against a chalkboard or whatever. Like I get it, I like it. You need to get used to it. Maybe I think I had to a little bit, but honestly I love his singing, I love his bass playing every. Everything those guys do. It’s just like you can’t imagine any any other trio doing it. It’s like it’s really magical, in my opinion, that that we have these albums from them. I’ve been going through them, uh, little by little. I have not. I mean, I’ve gone through the catalog a few times, but not like really sat down and and like listen to everything.

I’m reading Geddy Lee’s book, like my F in Life. It’s called Dude. That’s a sick book. That’s what’s making me really dive into some of these albums. But like just hearing how those guys like hung out. Well, I don’t want to say hung out and make it, but you know the stuff they went through touring and things like that.

I’m not gonna say they had terrible lives or whatever I mean. I mean whatever you have to read the book. But it get it’s getty lee like reading it, which is cool. I like it when books do that. So getty lee’s reading the book. It’s Geddy Lee like reading it, which is cool. I like it when books do that. So Geddy Lee’s reading the book, it’s pretty cool. He the reason why I was like oh, it’s not like I had a terrible life. I’m laughing because I’m like what an idiotic thing to say. Because his mother literally came from a concentration camp. So I’m like he didn’t directly have a terrible life, but his mother and father literally went through the concentration camps. So I’m an idiot for saying that. But anyways, it’s just a really interesting book. I might be like halfway through it or something, I don’t know. But um, yeah, that’s another thing I don’t know if I mentioned, but I read tons of books and I’ll probably throw in some, uh books that I’ve been reading here and there, but yeah, that’s the one I’m reading right now, which is why I’m you know why I’ve been listening to Rush, which is why I’m saying you gotta listen to Rush.

Test for Echo is another pretty cool album. I love the production on that album. It’s great. I love the bass tone Geddy Lee gets, for he gets like this really thick, warm, booming bass tone but like this tight punch to it at the same time. It’s really awesome, I it’s. It’s impressive. It really fills out the sound of the band. It’s impressive just everything those guys do. Just getty lee and neil working together as a rhythm section when alex is soloing. It’s really a masterpiece and works of art to listen to those albums honestly.

And, uh, you seriously gotta check out rush. I don’t know how many more times I’m gonna say that you think I’m like sponsored by rush or something, but for real, if you’re listening to possessed and cannibal corpse and Deicide and Testament and Anthrax and you know name anyone else, you know you’re gonna listen. You gotta listen to Rush, plain and simple. So, with that being said, email me at Hello at Embracerstormcom. Fill out a profile On Embracerstormcom.
